Hydroxycut
Due to its link to serious liver injuries and one death, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised consumers to immediately stop using the over-the-counter dietary supplement, Hydroxycut. In its warning issued May 1, 2009, the FDA identified 23 reports of Hydroxycut causing serious health problems ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes (an indicator of potential liver injury) to liver damage requiring liver transplant. Other health problems reported include seizures, cardiovascular disorders (ranging in severity from palpitations to a heart attack), and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure. One death due to liver failure has been reported to the FDA. The injuries reported to FDA occurred in persons between 21 and 51 years of age, and no other cause for liver disease was identified. In the majority of cases, no pre-existing medical condition that would predispose the consumer to liver injury was identified.
