New Rules for Mandatory Recall Notices Approved by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
New rules were unanimously approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Monday that will make certain types of product information required on all mandatory recall notices. The following types of information will now be required in an effort to increase recall effectiveness by better helping consumers identify products subject to a recall:
• Product Description
• Action Being Taken
• Reason for the Action
• Number of Units
• Identify Retailers
• Dates When Product Sold
• Number and Description of Injuries or Deaths
• Ages of Any Persons Injured or Killed
• Remedy Available to Consumers
• Any Additional Information as Deemed Appropriate by CPCS
The new rules do not apply to voluntary recall notices and CPSC will later decide to proceed with adopting a similar set of rules for voluntary recalls.
