Importance of Uninsured Motorist Coverage
Yes, You Really Need It!
Many people do not realize the importance of uninsured motorist (UM) coverage. UM coverage provides insurance to you for damages caused by a driver who has little or no auto insurance of their own. Sometimes insurance agents, in an effort to lower the cost of your insurance premium, will tell you that UM coverage is not necessary, especially when you have health insurance for your medical bills. UM pays not only medical bills, but also for lost wage income, household services, pain and suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life. The most frustrating and saddest cases that we see are those where the driver at fault has little or no automobile insurance and the innocent driver has the minimal personal injury protection coverage and no UM coverage.
If you insure more than one automobile through the same carrier, you have the option of stacking your uninsured motorist coverage. For a nominal addition to your premium, you are permitted to stack the limits of one policy on top of the other. Essentially, this affords you twice the uninsured motorist coverage than you would otherwise have. Because of the importance of uninsured motorist coverage, the State of Florida requires that your insurance carrier obtain a signed waiver of this coverage by you.
